OUR STORY

The Middletown, Odessa, and Townsend Pearls of Distinction began its journey towards chartering in the Fall of 2017.  The idea was sparked by the meeting of the minds of two members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Julia Watson-Jones and Dina White Griffin.  On January 11-14, 2018, the two had attended the 110th Founders’ Day Commemoration in Washington, D.C. It was there with the 21st Supreme Basileus, Faye B. Bryant and other members, that they stood on the freshly clod earth to dedicate the new official granite ivy marker at the Alpha Chartered Chapter Plot on the historic campus of Howard University. Standing there, on the sacred ground where our Founders stood in 1908, it was at that moment that they were Renewed and Rededicated to the ideals and principles of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. These sorority sisters envisioned what they believed was the opportunity to expand the sorority presence in the region. They committed to forge ahead in their desire to charter a graduate chapter that would serve Southern New Castle County Delaware.

On January 16, 2018, the day after Founders’ Day, a letter was sent to the Regional Director expressing their interest in chartering a new chapter. Several Pre-Interest Group meetings were held.  With the idea planted, the Pre-Interest Group quickly grew from 2 to 5 to 18 members. On June 1, 2019, the first official meeting was held at the home of one of its members. The group continued to grow to 29 potential members and on March 2, 2019, under the leadership of North Atlantic Regional Director, Mary Bentley LaMar, Middletown, Odessa, Townsend Pearls of Distinction became an Official Interest Group of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.
